Screen resolution, VGA and HDMI on Sony Vaio VPCS11E7E with Ubuntu 10.04 (no bed of roses)

Have you succeeded in installing Ubuntu 10.04 on your Vaio? Good, now let’s deal with screen resolution and shit like that (OMG, not my politeness day!). I know that installing NVIDIA proprietary driver and manually modifying xorg.conf works, but I don’t know if NVIDIA drivers are really required. If you wish to keep nouveau drivers read this post and use it your way.

Install NVIDIA drivers by System → Administration → Hardware drivers and when you’re asked to reboot don’t do it.

Open a terminal and type

gksu gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

and add lines 14 and 15 to that file, like this

What do those lines do?

  1. line: configures 3 possible monitors (DFP-0, DFP-1 e CRT).
  2. line: tells your graphic chip your monitor specifications (DFP-0) from an EDID generated by ACPI.

Now you can reboot and enjoy your VGA and HDMI (the latter sadly without sound at the moment).

Side effects

You will lose you virtual consoles. Well, actually they are still there, but when you switch to one of them your screen will shut down. You could try, CTRL+ALT+F1 (CTRL+ALT+F7 brings your desktop back). This is really annoying, but my eyes tell me it’s better than a wrong resolution.

This is energy saving on Linux 😀

VMware + Kernel 2.6.35

Se per caso state usando il Kernel 2.6.35, potreste non essere in grado di compilare correttamente VMware. Ecco qui due semplici istruzioni per compilare correttamente i moduli vmmon e vsock (Ubuntu 10.04, ma facilmente adattabili ad altre distro).

vmmon

Aprite un terminale a digitate quanto segue:

cd /tmp
tar xvf /usr/lib/vmware/modules/source/vmmon.tar -C /tmp
perl -pi -e 's,_range,,' vmmon-only/linux/iommu.c
sudo tar cvf /usr/lib/vmware/modules/source/vmmon.tar vmmon-only

vsock

wget http://www.debuntu.org/sites/www.debuntu.org/files/vmware-7.1-ubuntu10.10-patch.tar__0.gz
tar -xzvf vmware-7.1-ubuntu10.10-patch.tar__0.gz
cd vmware-7.1-ubuntu10.10-patch
sudo ./apply_patch.sh

Ora avviate VMware (anche il Player va bene) e lasciategli compilare i moduli.

Stupid designer

Boh, saranno i miei disturbi mentali, tuttavia mi capita spesso di soffermarmi su cose che solitamente sfuggono all’utente “medio”, che dal mio punto di vista va dal niubbo che bestemmia in terronesco perché non riesce a far vedere l’uccello alla morosa con la webcam, fino all’hacker che si scrive i driver della webcam per NetBSD(M, perché far funzionare una webcam lì sopra è doloroso ed appagante come il bondage) per far vedere l’uccello alla morosa del niubbo.

Date ora un occhio a queste 5 schermate e ditemi cosa notate:

Notato niente di particolare? Se mi rispondete «Il furgoncino FIAT da barbone» siete dei bugiardi, perché l’immagine è troppo piccola per leggere distintamente FIAT. Vi do un indizio.
